Forty-five-year-old Aubrey Williams and his uncle, 56-year-old Kester Isaacs, were on Friday, charged with the offence of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking contrary to Section 5(1) (a) (i) of the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act
Williams, a mason, of North East La Penitence, Georgetown and Isaacs, a farmer, of Train Line, Wismar, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) appeared before Magistrate Wanda Fortune at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
Both of them pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on April 27, at Train Line Wismar, Linden,they had 260 grammes of cannabis sativa in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.
They were granted bail in the sum of $75,000 each with the condition that they lodge their passports with the court and report to the Mackenzie Police Station on the first Monday of each month until the hearing and determination of their trial.
The matter was adjourned until June 27.
Police Headquarters said that an intelligence-led operation was conducted on April 27 at an alleged ‘drug block’ in Wismar, Linden, where ranks searched Williams whom they had under surveillance.
He was arrested by the Police in front of the ‘drug block’. Inside his right-side pants pocket, Police ranks found GY$15,990 suspected to be proceeds from the sale of narcotics.
The ranks went on to search the area and found one bulky black plastic bag that contained three transparent plastic bags with leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis sativa.
But Williams denied ownership of the suspected cannabis and said it belonged to Isaacs, his uncle. At the time, the pensioner was sitting in the suspected ‘drug block’. He, too, was arrested.
