A 21-year-old man, Joel Spooner has been remanded to prison for the murder of his 19-year-old girlfriend. Spooner of 311 Craig, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Courts.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that between April 12 and 13 at Craig, EBD, he murdered Shenese Walks. He was remanded to prison until May 17.
Police Headquarters noted that the killing occurred between 15:30 hours on April 12 and 11:45 hours on April 13 at the aforementioned address.
Reports are that Walks and her partner had a misunderstanding on April 12 during which she reportedly armed herself with a knife. Police said that while taking the knife away from his girlfriend, the man stabbed her to her neck.
Afraid of what happened, Spooner locked his injured girlfriend in the house and went away. On April 13, he contacted his brother and told him of what had transpired. Spooner’s sibling and his aunt escorted him to the Grove Police Station on the East Bank of Demerara.
Police ranks and Spooner later visited the scene where the now-deceased woman, who was dressed in a white stripe top with long blue pants, was found lying on her back beside a bed with a knife stuck in her left side neck. Walks was the mother of a one-year-old boy.
