Girl, 12, struck and killed by Police vehicle

A 12-year-old girl was killed earlier today by a Police vehicle. Dead is Kayla Barnabas, a student of the West Demerara Secondary School in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).

Police Headquarters said that the accident occurred at around  15:45 hrs on the Goed Fortuin Public Road, West Bank Demerara (WCD).

The accident involved the Guyana Police Force’s motor pickup GXX 6575 which was at the time being driven by a Police Corporal.

According to the Police, the motor pickup was  proceeding south along the eastern side of the road when the girl allegedly ran from east to west across the road and into the path of the vehicle. They Break News understands that the child was hit while using the pedestrian crossing.

Police Headquarters further said that the driver swerved west to avoid a collision but the front of the vehicle collided with the schoolgirl.   She was placed in a motor vehicle in an unconscious state and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigations are ongoing.
