…2 bottles of insecticide found next to corpse
The decomposed body of 56-year-old Vijaimal Raj, who was wanted for the April 12 murder of his wife, was found just after noon on Monday at Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Savitri Raj, 57, a mother of three, was stabbed to death by her husband of over 30 years at their Fifteenth Street, Foulis ECD home. Shortly after the killing, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) had issued a wanted bulletin for Vijaimal.
In a statement on Monday night, Police Headquarters said that at around 12:30hrs, a cattle farmer reported to the Police that while grazing his cattle, he observed a mosquito netting in the bush and upon checking, he saw the partially decomposed body of a male.
As such, a party of Policemen accompanied the farmer to the area. Upon arrival at the scene, the Police ranks found the body of Vijaimal in an advanced state of decomposition. His remains, which were clad in a red jersey, blue short pants and black cap, were found under a light blue mosquito net with some salt bags.
Two bottles of insecticide were also found next to the corpse. The scene was processed and photographed and the body of the deceased was identified by his son, Besham Raj.
Police had reported that the woman was murdered at around 01:00hrs on the day in question. The couple’s son had told the Police that he was in the lower flat of his home when he heard his mother screaming. He then ran to the upper flat where he proceeded to a bedroom where he saw his mother lying on a bed in a pool of blood.
The son had further told Police that his father jumped through a window and made good his escape. An emergency medical technician attached to Melanie Fire Station, East Coast Demerara was summoned and pronounced Savitri dead at the scene.
Police had said that Vijaimal was in the habit of verbally abusing his wife. Days before he fatally stabbed her, he had threatened to kill himself after killing her. The woman had reportedly been trying to leave her spouse because of his abusive tendencies.
