A 27-year-old man, Ryan Marks was on Wednesday sentenced to four years’ imprisonment along with a fine of $2.3 million after he pleaded guilty to a drug trafficking charge.
Marks of Bent Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He admitted that on Tuesday, June 14, he had 2.650 kilogrammes of marijuana in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Marks’s co-accused, 25-year-old Akeem Henry of no fixed place of abode, denied the charge and was remanded to prison until July 22.
On the day in question, Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) ranks conducted an operation at Orange Walk, Georgetown within the vicinity of Bourda Market where they intercepted Marks and Henry with a bag containing “brick-like” parcels of suspected cannabis.
As a result, they were both escorted to CANU headquarters, with the suspected narcotics, which tested positive for cannabis. The five five parcels containing cannabis has a street value of $800,000.
