His Excellency Dr Irfaan Ali commissioned the Mandela Avenue to Eccles four-lane highway on Thursday (April 14, 2022), which will significantly reduce traffic congestion on the East Bank of Demerara.

President Ali said that the new highway, which was conceptualised and designed when he was the Minister of Housing and Water almost a decade ago but built over the last 12 months, is just a small part of the large infrastructural development that will occur across the entire country.

During has address at the commissioning ceremony, he underscored the need for personal responsibility when using the roadway.

To ensure this, the President said, a new state-of-the-art system to monitor the speed of road users will be “turned on” in the coming weeks.

The new system will not only record speeding vehicles,  but it will also take photographs of the driver, and front-seat passenger. That information will be forwarded to the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Revenue Authority.

The 2.4km highway was designed in accordance with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official guide and is illuminated with 214 solar-powered lamps.
