President Dr Irfaan Ali, today, met with cane harvesters from the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) at the Uitvlugt Community Centre on the West Coast of Demerara .
President Ali used the opportunity to reassure the workers that his Government will not abandon them and the sugar industry.
The sugar workers had complained about being out of work for several weeks. To solve this issue, the President, after consultations with the company, instructed that all of the workers be provided alternative work for six days per week.
He also reassured them that the Government is working on a livelihood programme and several other initiatives that will alleviate their burdens.
President Ali was joined by the Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar.
