Six men who were recently busted with US$2.26M in marijuana were on Monday charged and remanded to prison for the offence. Those charged are David Jardine, 33, Dinesh Williams, 27, Pertab Singh, 53, Fabian Gonsalves, 56, Frank Gonsalves, 45, and Anthonio Ramlgan, 40.
The men appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. It is alleged that on October 1, 2021, they had 1000.2 pounds of marijuana in their possession for the purpose of trafficking. After the charge was read, Gonsalves and Singh pleaded, while the remaining four pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate then remanded them all the prison until October 11, 2021, when Gonsalves and Singh will be sentenced and proceedings for the other four will continue.
According to reports, an operation conducted over two weeks by Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) officers along with Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard ranks led to the seizure of 1000.2 pounds of local as well as foreign marijuana, three Go-Fast vessels, and six outboard engines.
The drug bust was made last Friday.
CANU reported that it gathered critical intelligence on the movement of narcotics from Guyana by a local drug trafficking organization to other Caribbean territories. As such, its ranks conducted operations in Regions 4,5, 6, and 7, which resulted in the drugs being confiscated.
According to CANU, the narcotics carry a street value of US$2.26 million.
