Two arrested after cocaine in curry dish discovered at CJIA

On the 7th of October 2022, Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) officers intercepted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), a man who was about to travel on a Jet Blue Airways flight destined for John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, USA.

A search of the passenger’s suitcase was conducted in his presence, which resulted in the discovery of a white substance suspected to be cocaine concealed in two bowls with cooked curry. 

Loaknauth Persaud, 36,  of Parika Backdam, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) was arrested and escorted to CANU headquarters with the suspected narcotics, which was subsequently tested and confirmed to be cocaine.

The drug weighed 6.28 kilogrammes (13.8lbs) and carries a street value of about USD 31,000 (GYD $6.3M).

Further investigations, led to the arrest of Manzil Ali called “John Ali”, a 43-year-old resident of Section C “D” Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

Investigations are ongoing.
