The Guyana LGBTQ Coalition recently met with Acting Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken in the Commissioner’s conference room where they expressed appreciation and noted the professional support received by the Police Force during the recently held Guyana Pride Festival.
Managing Director of the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD), Joel Simpson, SWAG’s Savannah Williams and Guyana Trans United (GTU)’s Omatola Jalade lauded the police work in assisting with security and the smooth flow of the parade.
It was noted that it was under Hicken’s leadership as Commander of Regional Division 4A in 2018 that the first parade received permission and support to bring public awareness to the work and challenges of the LGBTQ community in Guyana.
Acting Commissioner Hicken reiterated that the Police Force is on a trajectory of building relationships with the public in efforts to reduce conflict.
He offered the Guyana LGBTQ Coalition the opportunity to facilitate presentations to senior and junior ranks of the Police Force to create sensitization and awareness to reduce conflicts.
The Guyana LGBTQ Coalition then presented a “Thank You” plaque to the Police Force which was received by Hicken and Deputy Commissioner of Police ‘Operations’ (ag) Ravindradat Budhram.
