A 23-year-old woman of Hague, West Coast Demerara (WCD), who was arrested for attempting to ship GY$560,000 worth of cocaine through DHL was on Thursday remanded to prison for the offence of trafficking in narcotic.
Lisa Ramnarine of Hague, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on June 9, at DHL Headquarters, 50 E Fifth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, she had 540 grammes of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.
She was remanded to prison until July 5.
CANU officers acting on information intercepted a parcel containing a Hindu havan kunt, as well as other religious items at DHL Headquarters, 50 E Fifth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown.
Officers examined the items and discovered a hidden compartment within the kunt, which was suspected to contain narcotics.
Further examinations determined that a substance suspected to be cocaine was concealed within the religious item.
The sender’s information retrieved from the package led to the arrest of the woman.
She was taken to CANU’s headquarters where the item was dismantled in her presence, revealing the suspected narcotics, which tested positive for cocaine, weighing 540 grammes.
