A 19-year-old man who is accused of setting fire to three different properties was on Friday slapped with three counts of arson.

Anthony Sookhoo, a construction worker, of Lot 101 Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, appeared before Senior Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The first charge stated that on June 24, 2021, at George and D’Urban Street, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously set fire to a building valued at $38M property of Nalini Baboolall and articles valued at $10M property of Kevin Phillips.

It was further alleged that on the same date and place, he unlawfully and maliciously set fire to a building valued at $18M and articles valued at $6M property of Collin Brently.

The last charge stated that on the same day and at the same location, he unlawfully and maliciously set fire to a building valued at $150M and articles valued at $30M property of Haridat Maniram.

Sookhoo denied the charges after they were read to him. Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that the fire completely gutted two buildings and damaged another at the corner of D’Urban and George Streets, Werk-en-Rust.

The fire destroyed a building that housed a vulcanising shop owned by Phillips and his residence, another house, and damaged the western side of Elegance Jewellery and Pawn Shop. One of the buildings also housed several Venezuelan nationals.

The Prosecutor objected to bail citing being granted to the accused citing the possibility of him committing similar offences.

The Magistrate after listening to both sides released the defendant on bail in the total sum of $1.9M. He was also instructed to make his next court appearance on January 13, 2022.

Last July, 22-year-old Calvin Lawrence of Lot 101 Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, was slapped with the same three charges when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan who remanded him to prison.

His matters are ongoing.
