Teen nabbed with unlicensed firearm remanded to prison

An 18-year-old man who was recently arrested after being found with an unlicensed .38 revolver was on Wednesday charged and remanded to prison.

Tyreke Saunders of 4591 Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Saunders pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on October 3, 2021, at Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he had a .38 revolver in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm license enforced at the time.

Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Richard Harris stated that on the day in question, at around 04:00 hrs, Police ranks acting on information, went to Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown where they carried out a search on the teenager.

At the time of the search, the teen was carrying a blue Lacoste shoulder bag that contained the unlicensed gun; no ammunition was found.

When asked by the ranks if he was licensed to carry the gun, the teen replied no. As such, he was told of the offence committed, cautioned, arrested, and taken to East La Penitence Police Station.

The Prosecutor objected to bail being granted to the defendant because no special reason was highlighted.  In the end, the Chief Magistrate remanded him to prison until November 3, 2021.
