A 19-year-old miner,  Renaldo Rampersaud drowned on Tuesday when a canoe he was travelling in capsized between ‘Luw Luw’ Island Point and Banana Landing, Middle Mazaruni River, Region Seven.

A Police report said that Rampersaud and another male who work on a dredge owned by Nesha Joseph at Cashew Creek Backdam left the said backdam at about 15:00 hours in a wood skin boat and went to Banana Landing where they purchased some items from a shop.

Whilst paddling the canoe back to the dredge, it began taking in water and sank. The other man managed to swim to shore but Rampersaud went under the water and never resurfaced.

As such, a search party was launched and at about 16:50 hours, his body was recovered in the same area by his brother, Joshua Williams. Rampersaud’s body will be transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital where a post mortem examination will be conducted.

 Investigations are ongoing.
