The Guyana Police Force (GPF), on Saturday, said it is continuing its probe into the attack at State House—President Dr Irfaan Ali’s official residence—which occurred two days go.

The condition of Police Constable Telon Perreira who was injured by the suspect during the attack remains serious, Police Headquarters disclosed in a report.

On the other hand, Bethel Ikena Chimezie, the suspect, continues to be treated for his injuries, and based on the most recent update, he is still on a ventilator.

As such, investigators have not been able to question the suspect.

Also, due to the sensitive nature of this investigation, the GPF said it can only confirm that contact has been made with law enforcement counterparts as it relates to information related to Chimezie’s background and any other pertinent information. Investigations are continuing.

According to Police, at around 7:30h on December 15, there was an alleged shooting incident at the State House (southern guard hut) on Carmichael Street, Georgetown.

Constable Perreira was on duty at the south-eastern guard hut next to Carmichael Street on the specified date and time, when a man of mixed-race ethnicity believed to be Chimezie, confronted him and said, “I want the President.”

The suspect then pulled a knife from his waistband and stabbed the Police rank five times in the neck and other places on his body.  Another rank who was part of the security detail was relieved of his firearm by the suspect.

The accused then pulled out a gun, ran down Carmichael Street, and started firing. He was injured when the security personnel retaliated with fire.

A 9MM pistol and seven 9MM spent shells were retrieved.
