The Commander-in-Chief, President Irfaan Ali made this announcement at the annual Christmas lunch for the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) at Camp Ayanganna, Georgetown on Wednesday.

“In keeping with our commitment to our men and women in uniform, I announce your one-month bonus,” the President stated as he received a thunderous applause.

The President praised the soldiers and expressed his pride at learning that more than 45% of them are undergraduates, a fact he claims is unique to Guyana’s military. An eight percent wage increase and salary adjustments were also given to soldiers in recent weeks.

The Guyana Defence Force personnel will be able to borrow money at the lowest interest rate feasible thanks to negotiations the Government has successfully conducted with three local commercial banks.

“Interest rate of 3.5% of loans below $4 million and 3.75% for loans below $8 million,” the President stated.

Additionally, soldiers who have already been given houselots will also have access to steel and cement to help with constructing their houses.

The Head of State disclosed that the Government will arrange a meeting between soldiers and commercial banks on December 28 in order to obtain a loan for the construction of their homes.
