Robbery convict jailed three years for escaping from Lusignan Prison

Shamar Prince, 20, who is serving two five-year prison sentences for two counts of robbery under-arms was on Friday given an additional three years for escaping from the Lusignan Prison.

Prince of Amelia Ward, Linden appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.  He pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on November 11, 2021, at the Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara, he escaped from lawful custody.

Facts presented by the prosecutor stated that on the day in question, Prince was working on the prison farm when a truck entered the compound through the eastern gate. Prince exited the said gate and made good his escape into the backlands.

As a result, an alarm was raised and ranks from the Vigilance Police Station responded and searched the backlands where they recaptured him shortly after.

He was then told of the offence committed, cautioned, arrested, and escorted to the Vigilance Police Station and charged. The Magistrate after listening to the facts sentenced him to three years behind bars.

The sentence will run concurrently with his previous sentences.
