Police ranks and soldiers have been called in to quell a protest along the East Coast Demerara (ECD) involving hundreds of residents over the shooting death of 23-year-old father of one, Quindon Bacchus by a Police rank earlier this month.

Police Headquarters had said that Bacchus, of Golden Grove, ECD, was shot dead during a shootout with a plain clothes Police rank following an undercover operation in which he (Bacchus) attempted to sell the cop a gun. The killing occurred at Haslington, ECD.

The Police rank fingered in the killing has since been identified as Kristoff Denobrega. He is currently under open arrest and is confined to Police Headquarters, according to a statement from the  Guyana Police Force.

The Police Complaints Authority (PCA) is probing the fatal shooting.

Meanwhile, the Police Force, in a statement earlier today, said that it is  cognizant that there is a blockage of a section of the ECD road in the vicinity of Golden Grove which is disrupting the flow of traffic. The protestors have also burned piles of wood and a minibus.

The Police are urging persons to desist from this illegal act and clear the roadway. Further, the Police Force has debunked a false report by the Guyana Daily News of Denobrega being released from Police custody. It is believed that this misleading report triggered the protest.

Bacchus was laid to rest on Sunday.
