Porter dies after falling from moving lorry


A 30-year-old porter died on Monday after he fell from the tray of a moving lorry. The incident occurred sometime around 12:35 hrs at Number 65 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.

Police said that motor lorry GWW 7258 was driven by 27-year-old Ron Singh while the now-deceased 30-year-old Dayonand Chandraban called Rasheed, a porter was standing at the back of the lorry. 

According to information, the lorry was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane at an alleged rate of speed of 50 kmph while Chandraban was standing in the tray of the vehicle which was transporting zinc, cement, and other materials. 

The driver told the Police that while driving, he suddenly heard a loud noise coming from the tray of the lorry. As a result, he glanced into his right-side rearview mirror and observed Chandraban lying motionless in the centre of the road.

He immediately stopped the vehicle and assisted in picking up the porter who was in an unconscious state. The porter was then taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor who referred him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. 

Chandraban died while receiving treatment. A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver recorded zero readings. He is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.
