Police Constable charged with manslaughter over fatally shooting colleague, fisherman

A 26-year-old Police Constable, Shane James, who is stationed at the Mahaicony Police Station and resides at Perth Village, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD), is facing two manslaughter charges over the shooting death of another Policeman and a fisherman.

The shooting took place on January 1, at around 00:30h at Huntley Mahaicony, ECD.

Constable James was charged with two counts of manslaughter when he appeared at the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court. 

He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charges.

He was released on $1.6M bail– $800,000 bail on each of the two charges.

The case was adjourned until February 8.

The shooting resulted in the deaths of Detective Police Corporal Dwayne McPherson, 31, who had been stationed at the Mahaicony Police Station and 20-year-old Kishan Budburgh, a fisherman of Grove Huntley, Mahaicony, ECD.

Police Headquarters has released no further details about the incident.
