Pensioner killed after crashing electric bike into truck


A 67-year-old man is now dead after the electric bike he was riding crashed into a Canter truck on Tuesday at Number 72 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice. 

The accident occurred at around 17:45 hours. 

At the time of the accident, motor lorry GHH 7458 driven by 52-year-old Diaram Persaud of 8 ‘C’ Number 74 Village, Corentyne, Berbice was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane at a fast rate of speed.

Roopnarine Ramoutarage, 67, of 219 Number 72 Village, Corentyne, Berbice was proceeding north along the western side of the road on an electric bike. 

A Police report said that he made a sudden right turn east in the vicinity of Number 72 Village, Access Road, and ended up in the path of the truck. The bike collided with the right front right portion of the lorry.

As a result, Ramoutarage was flung off of the bike. He ended up some distance away on the eastern side of the road.  The electric bike was left stuck under the lorry which continued driving before stopping about 300 feet away.

Ramoutarage sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination. 

A breathalyzer test was conducted on Persaud and no trace of alcohol was found in his system.  He is presently in Police custody assisting with investigations. A notice of intended prosecution has been served on him.
