Pedal cyclist killed after riding into motorcar

Ramesh Jaikaram, 27, of Lot 81 Thyman Street, Better Hope North, East Coast Demerara (ECD) is now dead following an accident involving motorcars PAB 1884 and PYY 82.

A Police report said that the first car is owned and driven by Jermin Ross, 24, of Lot 15 Cottage village, West Coast Berbice (WCB), while motorcar PYY 82 was driven by Jonathan Rasulbaksh, 22, of Lot 31 Second Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.

The accident occurred on Monday at around 22:00 hours on the Vryheid’s Lust Public Road, ECD.

This publication understands that motorcar PAB 1884 was proceeding west along the northern side of Vryheid’s Lust Public Road at a fast rate of about 70 kmph. The traffic light signalled green in the driver’s path, and he proceeded onwards during which the pedal cyclist, Jaikaram rode into his path.

The driver said that upon seeing the pedal cyclist, he swerved to avoid a collision, but despite his efforts, the motorcar collided with Jaikaram. As a result of the impact, the pedal cyclist fell onto the road and sustained injuries to his body.

It is alleged by the driver of motorcar PYY 82 that he was proceeding south behind motorcar PAB 1884 in the southern driving lane of the road when the motorcar swerved south and collided with the pedal cyclist. Upon seeing that, he said he swerved south to avoid hitting the car and the pedal cyclist.

The injured pedal cyclist was picked up and conveyed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  A breathalyzer test was carried out on the driver of motorcars PAB 1884 and the driver of PYY 82 which gave a reading and print out of 0.00% respectively.

Both drivers were placed in Police custody pending investigation.
