Michael Henry, Attorney General candidate for New York, United States of America (USA) has called out the city’s Attorney General Letitia James, for throwing support behind devoted Guyanese APNU+AFC supporter Rickford Burke.
His criticisms come days after James attended a Diaspora Town Hall Meeting organised by Burke, who resides in Brooklyn, during which she vowed to lobby the President Joe Biden administration to investigation the PPP/C government for racial discrimination and corruption.
According to Henry, James is “cozying up” with Burke, who is wanted by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for “inciting public terrorism”” and “racism”. He noted that Burke has also openly threatened local Indo-Guyanese businesses with violence.
“It is disgraceful that Letitia James would embrace a wanted criminal who calls for racial violence against ethnic minorities here in New York. Violence against political opponents has no place here. Period,” said Henry in a media statement on Thursday.
He went on to add, “Letitia James should apologize – immediately – to the South Asian and Caribbean communities and all decent people here in New York for elevating and embracing someone who encourages violence on our streets.”
“James embraced Rickford Burke as a “brother from another mother,” at a Brooklyn meeting this past weekend. Mr. Burke faces charges in Guyana of inciting public terror and race hatred. He is affiliated with the PNC, one of two political parties in Guyana.”
The Attorney General Candidate pointed out that Burke has organised rallies in New York, calling for violence and intimidation against Indian-American and Caribbean-American business owners in Queens, has called for violence in Guyana and has made racial slurs against the South Asian community in New York.
Henry, in reminding that the PNC attempted to steal an election in 2020 and refused to concede for five months, stated, “The US, UK, EU, Canada and others intervened after the attempted fraud. The Guyana elections were certified by the Guyana Election Commission (GECOM) – and every other Caribbean nation – after Burke’s party tried – for five months – to delay the certification and execute a failed coup.”
Despite the international intervention, Henry said that James has advanced Burke’s claim that the Guyanese election was “rigged,” “stolen” and “racist”.
“[She] told a Brooklyn audience that she would use her power as Attorney General to involve other Democrat Attorneys General to call on the Department of Justice and Biden Administration go after the duly elected Guyanese government,” added Henry.
The PPP/C government has outright denied allegations of racism against Afro-Guyanese levelled against it by the APNU+AFC Coalition. Meanwhile, a few weeks back, the GPF issued a wanted bulletin for Burke in connection with the offence of publishing libel to extort money.
According to the Guyana Police Force, Burke conspired with two seasoned reporters, who have since been charged and released on cash bail, to extort millions of dollars from a local auto dealer. Burke has vehemently denied the accusations levelled against him.
