A motorcyclist and a pillion rider were on Saturday night injured following a hit and run accident at Zeelugt Public  Road, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

The accident involved motorcycle CL 3637 driven by Mark Harvey, 22, of Lot 174 Church Street, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara (WCD); along with pillion rider, Colette Austin, 22, of Lot 37 Bus Shed Street,  Uitvlugt, WCD; and a minibus for which the driver/owner and registration numbers are unknown.

Enquiries disclosed that the motorcycle was proceeding east along the northern drive lane of Zeelugt Public Road when it was alleged by the motorcyclist that he was approaching  Silk Cotton Dam Access Road, Zeelugt EBE.

At the time, the minibus which was proceeding south on the access road failed to stop on approaching Zeelugt Public Road and collided with the left side middle portion of the motorcycle. As a result, the motorcyclist and the pillion rider fell onto the roadway and received injuries to their bodies.

The minibus then fled the scene. The motorcyclist and the pillion rider were picked up by public-spirited citizens in a conscious condition and transported to Leonora Cottage Hospital.

The motorcyclist was then transferred to West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was admitted as a patient suffering from a  fractured left leg, while the pillion rider was treated and sent away.

Further investigation is ongoing.
