An agreement that Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall reached with the displaced vendors of the Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara market provides them with contracts to construct stalls at the new site.

On the heels of the vendors tearing down stalls that were being built for them to occupy at the recently constructed section of the market, Dharamlall met with the vendors on Tuesday to address their concerns. He assured the vendors that their new stalls will be built to match the dimensions and placement of their former stalls.

Dharamlall stated that the Ministry will give small contracts to sellers who want to build their own stalls in order to ensure that the stalls are completed in a timely manner.

“We’re in a better position, the engineers are on the ground meeting with the vendors to sort out the small contracts as well as to proceed with the construction,” he explained.

In order to keep the Ministry informed of the status of the construction project, a market committee made up of some of the vendors and Government representatives has been established.

The contractor had promised to have the new facility finished by August of this year. The Ministry had initially contracted Mohamed Rahim from Mohamed Rahim and Son Contracting Company to build the new facility. Since February, the company has been able to dismantle the old stalls, clearing the way for the construction of a concrete structure and the installation of a roof. The company, however, stopped working on the building in October. They Break News understands that the contract has now been handed over to another company.

The vendors are currently occupying temporary stalls on a tarmac close to the market.
