Miner fatally stabs man who constantly taunted him

A 25-year-old miner is currently in Police custody after fatally stabbing another miner 11 times at Obanna Backdam/Kurubrong Potaro, Region Seven. Police said the incident happened around 11:00 hours on Monday. Dead is 38-year-old Eon Anthony Ramnarine, a miner, of Lot 34 3rd Avenue Bartica.

According to a Police report, Ramnarine and the suspect are known to each other since their mining camps are located close by. It is alleged that the suspect is in the habit of cursing and talking to himself. The now dead man was in the habit of throwing hits at him and calling “a madman and aunty man” among other names, Police said.

On the date and time mentioned above, the suspect was passing next to Ramnarine’s camp to take a knife for his father to scrape an engine head.  Whilst the suspect was passing, the two men ended up in an argument during which it is alleged that Ramnarine picked up a piece of wood (pickaxe handle) and lashed the suspect to his head and left foot which resulted in them fighting.

The suspect who was armed with the knife then dealt Ramnarine several stabs to his body causing him to fall to the ground motionless.  The suspect then went to his father and told him what happened.

Sometime after, one Rajesh Persaud was passing in the area and saw Ramnarine lying on the ground and called the Police.

At the scene, the suspect was arrested and he handed over the knife to the police. He was told of the allegation,  cautioned, and admitted to stabbing Ramnarine during a fight. Ramnarine’s body was examined and 11 suspected stab wounds were seen to his left hand, chest/abdomen, and back.

A piece of wood was also found next to the body. Ramnarine was escorted to the Mahdia Public Hospital where he was officially pronounced dead on arrival at around 11:26 hours. The 25-year-old suspect was placed into custody as further investigations are in progress.
