A man who is accused of raping a 10-year-old girl has been committed to stand trial at the Berbice High Court.
Jason Matteson, 21, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that between November 1, 2019, and December 31, 2019, at Ithaca Village, Berbice, he engaged in sexual penetration of a child under 16 years.
At the end of a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Peter Hugh informed Matteson that a prima facie case was made out against him to put him on trial for the offence by a jury before a judge.
Accordingly, the rape accused was committed to stand trial at the next practicable session of the Berbice Criminal Assizes.
According to information, the child who was left in the care of Matteson complained to her parents that he raped her. The matter was then reported and Matteson was later arrested and charged for the offence.
Matteson remains out on $50,000 bail pending the hearing and determination of the High Court trial.
