A 25-year-old man was on Thursday committed to stand trial at the Berbice High Court for the offence of rape allegedly committed in January 2019.
Kumar Sukhram also known as ‘Akash’ of Kingston, Georgetown, appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Alex Moore.
At the conclusion of a Preliminary Inquiry, the Magistrate ruled that a prima facie case was made out against Sukhram to put him on trial for the offence before a judge and jury.
According to a Police release, the rape was allegedly committed in January 2019. Sukhram was arrested in November 2019 and following investigations, he was formally charged in March 2020.
The Police statement further added that the rape accused professed his innocence to the Magistrate by telling him, “I’m innocent sir”. Sukhram was nevertheless released on $100,000 bail pending the hearing and determination of his trial.
