Man remanded to prison for murder of Kaneville miner

Dead: Nelson Thomas

A man who is accused of fatally stabbing a miner was remanded to prison on Monday. Leroy Griffith appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Court.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on September 9, 2021, at Kaneville, East Bank Demerara (EBD), he murdered 36-year-old Nelson Thomas called Nelo.

Griffith was remanded to prison until October 26.

According to reports, on the day in question, at around 12:30 hrs, Thomas returned home along with his wife after spending some time in Cuyuni to have his newborn baby registered. Around 19:00hrs, he told his mother that he was going to visit his uncle in Second Street Kaneville, EBD.

However, at around 21:30 hrs, a resident was awakened by the voice of someone calling for him, and upon checking, he saw Thomas lying motionless to the eastern side of his yard under a shed attached to his house with what appeared to be blood about his body.

The resident then called and reported the matter at Grove Police Station. Police in a statement said that it appears as though the now dead man was returning home when someone attempted to rob him and stabbed him during the process.

The injured man was picked up and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  The matter was then investigated and Griffith was arrested and charged.
