Man, 26, stabbed to death during quarrel at Vreed-en-Hoop stelling; brother hopsitalised

Police are currently investigating the murder of Sigmol Gouveia, 26, of Lot 72 Block ‘A’ Sophia, Greater Georgetown, and the attempted murder committed on his brother, Neville Gouveia, 37.

Police Headquarters said that the siblings were involved in a heated argument with another man on Saturday at around 23:15 h at the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling, West Coast Demerara.

They Break News understands that Neville is employed as a security guard at the dockyard at Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling. At about 23:10 h, a boat arrived at the stelling’s koker with three unknown men. One of them, exited the vessel while the remaining two took the boat out on the river.

A short while after, there was a verbal confrontation between Sigmol and the suspect who told him that he cannot use the area for passage. The suspect was further advised to call back the boat to pick him up from the premises.  A report from the Police said that the suspect reportedly did so.

However, another argument broke out between Sigmol and the suspect during which the suspect dealt him a stab to his abdomen causing him to fall to the ground in an unconscious state.

The victim’s brother Neville, upon seeing this, approached the suspect. But he was also stabbed- to his right upper arm and chest. The boat returned shortly after with over 10 persons on board. They were all armed with pieces of wood and cutlasses. They collected the suspect and they all headed across the river.

Both victims were picked up by the Police and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where Sigmol was pronounced dead on arrival. His brother was admitted as a patient.
