Sumintra Sarju, called ‘Mai’ of number 60 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, turned 101 years old on Sunday. She was born on March 27th, 1921 in East Canje, Berbice.
Sarju met Lawrence Bharat and they got married. Thereafter, they relocated to Bloomfield Village, East Corentyne-Berbice. Their union produced nine children, seven of whom are still alive.
After living at Bloomfield Village for over 25 years, Sarju and her husband relocated to Number 60 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, and she still resides there.
The elderly woman worked in the sugar industry for many years, to make ends meet for her children. She worked in a number of fields, including cane harvesting.
Additionally, Sarju collaborated with her husband, who passed away several years ago, to establish their garden and cultivate a wide range of vegetables.
Moreover, they also fished. As Sarju ages, she is cared for by one of her son, Arnold, and other relatives. The elderly woman does not have many health ailments other than a slight hearing problem. She can move around freely by herself.
