Jailed: Gavin Martin

A 23-year-old man was on Tuesday sentenced to three years imprisonment, along with a fine of $1.8 million for trafficking five pounds of marijuana.

Gavin Martin of of One Mile Extension, Wismar, Linden, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Courts.

He pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on December 24, 2021, at the Demerara Harbour Bridge, Peter’s Hall, East Bank, Demerara (EBD), he had 2.280 kilogrammes of marijuana in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

On the day in question, Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) ranks acting on information went to the Demerara Harbour Bridge where they observed Martin holding a bag.

A search was then conducted and inside the bag, they found five parcels containing a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis. As such, Martin was arrested and escorted to CANU headquarters where the narcotic was weighed in his presence.
