The man who is accused of setting his wife afire then fleeing to the USA was on Thursday arraigned on a murder charge after the woman died on Saturday.
Ganeshwar Sheocharran, 27, a hire car driver of Lot 16 Miss Ruby, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that between September 14 and 18, 2021, he murdered his wife 29-year-old Sandrama Raju.
She died on Saturday at the Port Mourant Hospital.
He appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan via zoom at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where the new charge was read to him. The murder accused was remanded to prison until October 14, 2021, when he will appear at the Whim Magistrate’s Court to collect statements.
On September 17, last, Magistrate Clive Nurse read an attempted murder charged to him and remanded him to prison after Raju remained hospitalised in a critical state.
According to reports, on the day in question, the couple was involved in an argument at their home during which Sheocharran lit the woman on fire then made good his escape. The woman was taken to the hospital in a critical state with burn injuries to some 98 per cent of her body.
The Guyana Police Force in a statement said that Sheocharran, after committing the act, boarded a flight to the USA. As a consequence, Police here contacted law enforcement officials in the USA and informed them that he was wanted in Guyana.
Upon his arrival in the USA, the accused was denied entry and sent back to Guyana. He was then promptly arrested by local investigators and placed in custody.
