Father Malcolm Rodrigues passed away this morning at St Joseph Mercy Hospital at the age of 85. Father Rodrigues during his lifetime was a well-known and celebrated Jesuit priest. Apart from his religious obligation, he was involved in environmental stewardship and the fight to uphold democracy. Father Martin was respected by politicians from both sides during his life.

‘They Break News’ on Monday spoke to Father Paul Martin a Jesuit Priest on the life of Father Rodrigues and was told that during Father Rodrigues’s lifetime, he had a passion for helping others in need, and devoted much of his life in service to the people of Guyana.

“Many people can testify to his great kindness, his great generosity, his cheerfulness, and his concern for the poor and those in need. He had great compassion and visited the prison many times, he also had great compassion for the sick. He was motivated by his faith in God and the desire to teach the Gospel and see it live in society.” Father Paul Martin SJ

According to Father Martin, during the life of Father Rodrigues, he was seen as a man of integrity not because of religious ideology or political lines but because of his desire to promote quality, value, justice and equality.

“Father Rodrigues has left that understanding ,that strong religious conviction can motivate persons in the service of others. Because of his religious conviction, he offered himself in service and conviction. He was not trying to persuade others to join his religious belief but instead worked to promote a just society. Because of this, during his lifetime he was able to build bridges with persons of other faiths, and people of different ideologies.” Father Paul Martin SJ
