On the heels of President Irfaan Ali announcing new salary scales for members of the Disciplined Services, the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) has called on the Government to take a similar posture in adjusting salaries for public servants and teachers.

The Guyana Teachers’ Union said on Thursday that teachers, for too long, have been subjected to meager salaries. The union called on President Ali to consider its proposal for salary and non-salary benefits as outlined in the document submitted in recent months.

The GTU believes the country has adequate resources to not only increase salaries for some sector workers, but for all workers in Guyana.

The union stressed that teachers undergo far more training and rigorous studies to attain the status of Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, Head of Department, among others, and implored the President to engage in fixing the salary issues affecting the nation’s educators.
