Good Hope man electrocuted while erecting Christmas tree, 3 others hospitalised

The family of 29-year-old machinist, Deepak Ramdeen has been plunged into a state of mourning after receiving news that he was electrocuted on Friday while erecting a 27-feet Christmas tree at the home of Gupta Ramcharran at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

According to Police Headquarters, the tip of the metal Christmas tree came into contact with a live wire overhead which caused Ramdeen of Good Hope, ECD to be electrocuted.

Police enquiries disclosed that at around 23:00h, Ramdeen and other were erecting the metal Christmas tree using a crane attached to a lorry bearing registration number GCA 9708.

Darampaul Prettipaul was operating the lorry.

Ramdeen, along with Gupta Ramcharran, called ‘Billy’, a 45-year-old fitter machinist of Lot 139 East Lusignan, ECD; Mahendra Ramcharran, a 41-year-old businessman of Good Hope, ECD; and Shivraj Rulall, a 20-year-old of Mon Repos, ECD were in the process of erecting the metal tree outside the home, when tragedy struck.

Ramdeen and the others received electric shocks to their bodies. They were all rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where Ramdeen died. Rulall, Gupta Ramcharran and Mahendra Ramcharran remain patients at the Burns Unit at GPHC.

Investigations are ongoing.
