Gold miner killed during fight over money he owed

A 38-year-old gold miner is now dead following a fight with the reputed husband of a woman to whom he owed money. Dead is Victor Pedro of Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).

Police Headquarters said the incident took place on December 10, at Turtle Creek, Five Star, North West District.  Pedro’s 13-year-old daughter told the Police that at around 19:00 hours, she was at home cooking when she observed a female cook and her father arguing over money he owed her.

As a result, the suspect who is the cook’s reputed husband got involved in the argument.  It was then that Pedro armed himself with a sharp instrument which he used to lash the suspect twice about his body.

Pedro, the Police said, knocked the suspect’s music box out of his hand which led to a scuffle between them. The teen girl related that she ran away and upon her return, she found her father with a gaping wound to the middle of his head and another to his left side face.

She said the suspect and the female cook then made good their escape. The now-deceased man confided in his daughter that the suspect inflicted the wounds on him, the Police said.

When the Police arrived at the scene, Pedro’s body was seen lying on the earth’s surface covered with a multi-coloured sheet. Two deep wounds were observed on his head and the left side of his face.

He was transported to the Port Kaituma District Hospital where he was later pronounced dead on arrival. His body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect as investigations continue.
