Georgetown Mayor Ubraj Narine and Opposition MP Sherod Duncan detained, placed on $100,000 for attempting to stir up ethnic and racial conflict in Guyana

Georgetown Mayor, Ubraj Narine and APNU+AFC parliamentarian, Sherod Duncan were both arrested today and released on $100,000 bail after being accused of impeding traffic and seeking to create racial and ethnic unrest in Guyana.

According to police investigations, a file was submitted for legal advice invoking the joint prosecution of Ubraj Narine and Sherod Duncan for obstructing traffic in violation of Section 61 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, for their position beneath a motor lorry on New Market Street.

Narine and Duncan were recommended to face the following charges:

** Ubraj Narine be charged with the offence of obstructing Traffic, contrary to Section 61 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02 in relation to placing a wooden pallet on New Market Street.

** Ubraj Narine and Sherod Duncan be jointly charged with the offence of using a computer system to attempt to excite ethnic divisions on the ground of race, Contrary to Section 18(2) of the Cyber Crime Act, No. 16 of 2018 (an indictable offence).

** Ubraj Narine and Sherod Duncan be jointly charged with the offence of Attempting to excite hostility or ill will on the ground of race, contrary to Section 2(1)(a) of the Racial Hostility Act, Chapter 23:01.
