Fisherman remanded for murdering security guard at stelling

A fisherman who is accused of fatally stabbing a security guard during an argument was on Friday charged with the capital offence of murder.

Alistair Persaud, 25, appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty via zoom at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate Court.

It is alleged that on September 18, 2021, at Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling, West Coast Demerara, he murdered 26-year-old Sigmol Gouveia.

The father of two was remanded to prison until October 12, 2021. Persaud was represented by Attorney-at-law Bernard Da Silva who claimed that his client was beaten while he was in police custody.

Sigmol Gouveia and his 37-year-old brother Neville Gouveia were doing security work at the Vreed-en-hoop Stelling, West Coast Demerara on the day in question.

It was reported that at around  23:10hrs, a boat arrived at the stelling’s koker with three unknown males.

One of the males exited the vessel while the remaining two took the boat out on the said river.

A short while after there was a verbal confrontation between Sigmol and Persaud after the latter was told that he cannot use the said area for passage.

Persaud was further advised to call back the said boat to pick him up from the premises.

During that time, another argument ensued between the two men and it was then that Persaud dealt Sigmol a stab to his abdomen causing him to fall to the ground in an unconscious state.

The victim’s brother Neville, who was present, approached Persaud, however, he too received stab wounds to his right upper arm and chest.

The boat then returned shortly after with over ten persons on board. They were all armed with pieces of wood and cutlasses.

They collected Persaud and they all headed across the river.

Both victims were picked up by Police ranks and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where Sigmol was pronounced dead on arrival, while his brother was admitted as a patient.

The matter was further investigated and Persaud was later arrested and charged.
