Family claims money, other belongings of COVID-19 victim stolen at Liliendaal Hospital

The family of 49-year-old Karan Deodat, a mechanic of East Street, Georgetown is calling on the relevant authorities to look into a recent incident which they said occurred on Friday, last,  at the Infectious Disease Hospital at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown. Deodat died shortly after testing positive for COVID-19.

The now dead man’s reputed wife, Kimberly Deodat told this publication that her spouse received his first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine on September 8, 2021, as his immunisation card was required for him to gain access to the Guyana Revenue Avenue headquarters where he had some business to transact.

She said that he suffered from heart complications and also had diabetes and as such after taking the vaccine he experienced shortness of breath, loss of appetite, pains, and other side effects.  Kimberly said that she took him to the Balwant Singh Hospital where he was examined and later discharged.

However, the following day, his condition worsen and was taken back to the said hospital where he tested positive for COVID-19. According to her, he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was once against examined and discharged.

Later that day, she said her husband complained of being unable to breathe and, as such, she called an Ambulance which transported him to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He was transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital where he died at around 17:50 h the said day.

The woman said that when she went to the hospital to uplift her husband’s belongings, several items were missing, including a Samsung A71 phone valued at $100,000, $53,000 in cash as well as his pillow. Kimberly said that her husband was recovering and was scheduled to return home the day he passed away.

She said efforts made to contact the doctor who was taking care of him have proved futile. “They insulted the dead”, a grieving Kimberly expressed. 

The family is calling on the relevant authorities to look into the matter.
