A 63-year-old man and his 58-year-old wife were on Thursday charged with trafficking 45 grammes of cocaine.

Henry Trim and Mahdai Netchandra both farmers of Number 60 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.

The duo denied the charge which stated that on December 14, 2021, at Lot 333 Number 60 Village Cotentyne, Berbice, they had 45 grammes of cocaine in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.

They were each ordered to post $100,000 bail. They will make their next court appearance on February 9, 2021, for report at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that on the day in question, ranks conducted a search exercise in the area for guns, ammunition, and narcotics.

While at the couple’s residence, Police ranks met Netchandra, who in their presence handed over a transparent glass bottle to her husband.

The elderly man then ran into the house and threw the bottle into some bushes at the back of the yard. Police retrieved the bottle containing two transparent plastic bags with a whitish rock-like substance suspected to be cocaine.

The couple was told of the offence committed and cautioned during which Trim admitted to owning the drug.

As such, the man and his spouse were arrested and taken to the Number 51 Police Station where the suspected cocaine was weighed in their presence.
