A 31-year old man who is accused of fatally stabbing his former friend has been charged with manslaughter. Marlon Clarke of Mocha East Bank Demerara (EBD), appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Courts.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on November 4, 2021, at Arcadia Street, Mocha, East Bank Demerara, he unlawfully killed Paul Braithwaite.

He was remanded to prison until January 3, 2022.

According to information, Clarke and Braithwaite are known to each other and were friends up until September, last,  when they encountered a misunderstanding over a female.  It was reported that the men would engage in periodic arguments over the said female.

However, on November 4, last, at about 23:20 hours, both men were hanging out at Arcadia Street, Mocha when they got into a heated argument. The two men then reportedly brandished knives and started stabbing each other.

Braithwaite then attempted to flee the scene but fell onto the western side of the road where he laid motionless. Clarke then ran to the Mocha Police Outpost and reported the incident. He was told of the offence committed, cautioned, and arrested.

Clarke was then taken to the  Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was treated and sent away. When Police ranks arrived at the scene, they found Braithwaite who had several stab wounds about his body.

The injured man was also taken to the said hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The matter was then investigated and Clarke was arrested and charged with the present offence.
