Duo remanded on armed robbery charge

Remanded to prison: O-keeffe Wilson and Tyrone McRae

Two youths who are accused of robbing a man of his gold chains were on Wednesday charged with the offence of robbery under-arms and remanded to prison.

O-keeffe Wilson, 22, of McDoom, East Bank Demerara (EBD), and 18-year-old Tyrone McRae, a fisherman, of Kaneville, EBD, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The men denied the charge which stated that on December 4, 2021, at Middle Road, McDoom, EBD, while being in the company of others, they robbed Deryck Christopher Bennett of two gold chains valued at $351,000.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that on the day in question, at around 17:15 hrs, Bennett and a friend were at a shop at Middle Road, McDoom consuming alcohol when five males were seen walking in a southern direction.

Shortly after, while Bennett was about to enter his yard, Wilson and another man walked behind him, while McRae stood guard at the gate. The prosecutor further went on to tell the court that Wilson pulled the victim’s chains while the other person pointed a gun at him.

The men then made good their escape. The matter was reported to the Ruimveldt Police Station and following an investigation, the two defendants were arrested and positively identified by the victim as the persons who robbed him.

The Prosecutor objected to bail being granted to the men citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts. The Magistrate after listening to the facts remanded the defendants to prison until December 15.
