Driver in deadly De Willem accident gets bail

The driver of the motorcar that was involved in the fatal accident that claimed the life of 54-year-old Kenneth Smith has been released on $300,000 bail after being slapped with a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

21-year-old Tyree Tyree Li-A-Ping of Hague Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), was hauled before Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Vreed-En-Hoop Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him.

The charge alleged that on July 24, 2021, Li-A-Ping dangerously drove motor car PZZ 9052 to the public, thereby causing the death of Smith.

Li-A-Ping was placed on $300,000 bail, and the matter was adjourned until August 11, 2021.

They Break News had reported that on the day in question, motor pickup GPP 8150 driven by 39-year-old Sahadeo Singh was proceeding east along the northern side of the De Willem Public Road in a line of traffic when he alleged that he turned on his right traffic indicator to turn south into Harrykisson street.

He said that during the process of doing so, the driver of PZZ 9052 lost control of his vehicle and collided with him before crashing into a fence along the northern side of the road and finally colliding with Smith and another pedestrian, Rampaul Sursen – who was standing in the yard.

As a result of the collision, both vehicles were damaged, and the pedestrians received injuries to their bodies.

They were picked up in an unconscious state and placed into a motorcar, and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where both of them were seen and examined by a doctor on duty.

However, Smith later died while receiving medical attention, and Sursen was referred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, suffering from a fractured left ankle and injuries to his body.
