Driver abandons car with GY$8M in marijuana at Haslington

Several parcels of marijuana worth GY$8M were found in the abandoned car by CANU officers

On June 8, Custom Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) officers conducted an operation in the vicinity of Hope Bridge, East Coast Demerara (ECD) where they attempted to stop a white Toyota Fielder wagon with the licence plate PAB1884. 

The driver refused to stop, prompting CANU officers to give chase. 

The officers pursued the vehicle into Haslington New Scheme, ECD where the driver of the motor vehicle stopped and fled into nearby bushes. 

Officers attempted to apprehend the driver but were unsuccessful. A search was conducted on the vehicle, which led to the discovery of several parcels of suspected cannabis.

The motor vehicle and the suspected narcotics were transported to CANU Headquarters, where the narcotic tested positive for cannabis. 

The parcels weighed a total of 39.9 kilogrammes and has an estimated value of GY$8M.

Investigations are ongoing.
