Several boxes containing thousands of Statements of Polls (SoPs) and Statements of Recount (SoRs) were on Monday handed over to seven persons- including former Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo- who are charged with conspiring to rig the March 2020 national elections.
Also charged are: Chairperson of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) Volda Lawrence; APNU+AFC activist Carol Smith-Joseph; GECOM Clerks Denise Bob-Cummings and Michelle Miller; GECOM Elections Officer Shefern February, and Information Technology Officer Enrique Livan.
This morning when the matter was called before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, Special Prosecutor Darshan Ramdhani, QC indicated to the court that copies of the SoPs and SoRs, along with statements and a video-recorded Police interview will be handed over to the seven accused persons.
The Prosecutor further went on to tell the court that the scanned documents can be uploaded to flash drives and be used in court to ease the burden of the paperwork. The Magistrate adjourned the matter to December 17, 2021, for report after which a date will be set for case management. Mingo and the others are out on cash bail pending the hearing and determination of their trial.
Last year August, the Guyana Police Force had announced that it will be conducting a comprehensive investigation into the alleged criminal conduct of the defendants in relation to the March 2, 2020 elections, and the events that followed. The charges stem from a series of alleged grave violations by Mingo, and the others regarding their conduct during and after the close of polls.
