Berbice resident, Chandralall Lakraj, called ‘Uncle Pappi’ was convicted by a 12-member jury on Monday of raping an 11-year-old girl.
He had been on trial at the High Court in Berbice for one count of rape and one count of sexual activity committed on the minor between September 1 and October 9, 2019.
The first charge stated that he sexually penetrated the girl, while the other stated that he sexual penetrated her by causing her to touch his penis.
Lakraj, who was represented by Attorney-at-Law Chandra Sohan, had pleaded not guilty to both charges upon his arraignment before Justice Brassington Reynolds last week.
But following a trial, the jurors found him guilty on both charges. As a result, the convicted child rapist was remanded to prison until September 13 when he will be sentenced.
According to information, Lakraj had the girl rub his penis until he ejaculated. He also penetrated her vagina with his fingers. After the child confided in her teacher about the sexual assaults, a Police report was made which led to Lakraj being arrested and prosecuted.
Representing the prosecution in this matter was State Counsel Nafeeza Baig.
