Berbice man (54) beaten to death over stolen jewellery

A 54-year-old man is now dead after he was beaten by two men for allegedly stealing a quantity of jewellery. Dead is  Bheem Evans of Number 11 Squatting Area, West Coast Berbice (WCB).

A Police report said the incident took place on November 12, 2021, at around 20:00 hours. The report stated that Evan’s son was on his way home on a street in Block “D” Bath Settlement, WCB when he was attacked by the suspects who were armed with a cutlass, rope, and chain.

The suspects told the victim’s son that his father went into one of the suspect’s homes and stole a silver chain, a gold chain, and eight silver rings. The suspects subsequently dealt Evan’s son several lashes about his head, face, and back which caused him to receive injuries.

The suspects then held on to Evans and dealt him lashes about his face and body while asking him for the supposed stolen articles. The victim denied the allegations and the suspects then wrapped him in a one-ton rice sack and dragged him about 300 feet into another street in the said village.

They then threw him on the grass parapet and told his son to take him home.  The son went to the Fort Wellington Police Station and reported the matter.

Evans was picked up by the Police in an unconscious condition and taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he died while receiving treatment. The 23-year-old and 27-year-old male suspects were later arrested and remain in custody pending further investigations.
