A 22-year-old unemployed man of Craig, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was on Thursday charged with stealing a motorcar. Christopher Persaud called “Yankee” and “Mohan”, was brought before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Courts.

Persaud pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that between November 8 and 9, he stole a Toyota Primo motorcar valued at $2.4M from Rameshwar Dehali. The vehicle is the property of Anesa Yusuf.  The accused will return to court on December 5.

They Break News had previously reported that Persaud was arrested while in possession of both the keys and motorcar that were stolen from a workshop in Tank Street, Grove, EBD.

The car bearing registration number PSS 6964 was stolen from 41-year-old Dehali’s workshop. He is an auto-body repairman of Grove Squatting Area, EBD.

Police Headquarters reported that Yusuf took the car to Dehali on Tuesday for him to “spray the back bumper”. Dehali then parked the car inside the yard of his workshop and went away, to return the following day to commence work on the vehicle.

He left Ellon (only name given) who would usually provide security for the workshop and properties therein, in his absence. On Wednesday, Dehali returned to his workshop and discovered that the motor car was missing, along with its key, and several other keys for other vehicles. The security guard, Ellon, was also nowhere around.

According to the repairman, he immediately tried to contact Ellon via cellphone to ask him if he had removed the vehicle, but to no avail. He thereafter contacted Yusuf via cellphone and asked her if she had collected her vehicle and she replied in the negative.

They immediately started to search for the vehicle. Based on information received, they went to Second Street, Craig, EBD where they saw the car parked on the northern side of the road facing east with all its parts intact. Three males were standing next to the car.

The men were asked who the driver of the car is and two of them pointed out Persaud. Dehali carried out a search on Persaud during which he found the car key, along with other keys mentioned in his pants pocket.

He immediately summoned Police ranks who responded and arrested Persaud who was then escorted to the Grove Police Station, along with the vehicle. Police are on the hunt for Ellon.
