A 16-year-old alleged bandit was on Wednesday shot dead by a Police officer after he and two others attempted to snatch a woman’s gold chain from around her neck.

The dead bandit has been identified as Sydel Bourne of Agricola, East Bank Demerara. According to a Police release, the incident took place around 14:30hrs, at Stabroek Market Square, Georgetown.

Investigations revealed that a Policeman, who was in plainclothes and armed with his service pistol, was shopping in the Stabroek Market area accompanied by his reputed wife who was wearing a gold chain at the time.

They were attacked by Bourne, who was armed with a knife and accompanied by two other male suspects. The Policeman’s reputed wife resisted, but the perpetrators were able to burst the chain from around her neck. One of Bourne’s accomplices told him to stab the woman.

Upon hearing this, the Policeman discharged a round in their direction. The bullet hit Bourne, while his accomplices made good their escape. The teen was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
